After graduation from Ball State University in 1948 Joan Touby married Edver Wilmot Coburn, whose parents, Rev. and Mrs. Walter H. Coburn had come in 1941 as ministers to the Rich Valley Christian Church.  Edver served as an enlisted pilot in the U. S. Navy during World War II, and upon completion of his degree from Purdue University, they moved to Fulton County and later to Marshall County where both taught school for many years.  Their children are Charlotte, Marcia, Phillip, Lesley, and Jonathan.

Charlotte Coburn, born 12/06/1950, graduated from Ball State University in 1972 and from United Theological Seminary in Dayton in 1993.  Charlotte married Elmer Frank Hesse, Jr. in 1972.  She taught junior high and high school English before becoming a full time mom to Shannon Elise and Sarah Frances.  Elmer, also a graduate of Ball State, was Assistant Director of Computing Services at the Ball State and later Director of Computing Services at Wright State University.  Elmer died in 1995 after an extended illness.  From 1988-2005 Charlotte served several Presbyterian USA churches as Director of Christian Education.  In 1998 Charlotte married Terry Keith McGowan, manager of Worldwide Application Development for GE Lighting.   Terry and Charlotte are owners of Lighting Ideas, Inc., a business where Terry is consultant and Charlotte is bookkeeper.  Charlotte’s daughter Shannon Hesse is married to Anthony Takaharu Kitai.  Shannon is a professional pianist and Tony is cellist with the Houston Symphony.  They have two children - Julia Masako Hesse Kitai and Elliott Makoto Hesse Kitai.  Daughter Sarah Mintah is married to Alexander Offei Mintah.  Both Sarah and Alex work for companies that contract with USAID and do development work where they specialize in projects in Africa.  They have three daughters - Isabel Owusuaa Mintah, Annabel Adobea Mintah, and Alexandra Offeibea Mintah.


Marcia Coburn, born 3/2/1952, graduated from Indiana State University in 1974 and the American Institute of Banking in 1992.  Marcia married Richard Eugene Pett, Jr. in 1972 and they lived in the southern suburbs of Chicago for 30 years where Gene taught science and was head of the science/math department at Bloom High School in Chicago Heights, IL.  Marcia served as treasurer of a nursery school cooperative and worked as a banker.  Marcia and Gene are now retired and live in Grove, OK.  They have two children. Scot Alan Pett (1975) graduated from the University of Iowa and married Joelle Lyn Mascari in 2003.  They have two children; Jordan Scot Pett (2007) and Kaylee Lyn Pett (2009) and live in Troy, MI where Scot works for the Detroit Tigers baseball team.  Dawn Allison Pett (1977) graduated from Illinois State University and now lives in the Chicago Metro area and works at the Sears headquarters.

Phillip Dean Coburn, born 3/2/1953, graduated from Lincoln Technical College in Automotive Technology.  He was an automobile technician at Don Medow Motors for 20 years and a Field Service Representative for AM General, serving primarily in Kuwait and Egypt.  In 1987 Phil married Karon Robinson and they have lived in North Liberty, In.  Karon worked for United Telephone Company a number of years.  Phil and Karon own the Corner Cup Cafe in Walkerton, IN.  Karon has two children Douglas Etherington and Penni Fansler, whom Phil considers his own.  Beloved grandchildren include Ashlee, Michael, and Jared Fansler, and Shane, Victor, Morgan, Simone, and Nicholas Etherington.  Phil died on March 14, 2016 after an extended illness.
